  • (1) Agnes Grierson, "6th child of (Sir) William Grierson, of Lag & Nicola Maxwell", was born before 1599, & had a marriage contract with John Laurie, of Maxwellton, who was baptised on September 21st, 1609, Dumfries, Scotland; marriage contract was dated November 20th, 1630, & she died February 3rd, 1664.John Laurie was born in Kilquhonnedie.The wedding date is actually that of marriage contract mentioned in Lag Charter app. no. 26.

Witnesses to the marriage contract dated 20th November, 1630 between John Laurie, of Maxwellton & Agnes Grierson, daughter & sixth child of (Sir) William Grierson, of Lag & Nicola Maxwell were: (consent given by (Sir) Robert Grierson, Agnes’ brother), William Grierson, of Bargaltoun & his brother, & receipt for the dowry was signed Whit 1631 by John Grier (aka Grierson), of Estate of Capenoch, Lancelot Grier (aka Grierson), of Dalkeith, James Grier (aka Grierson) in Dalgoner.At the baptism of John Laurie above - 21st September, 1609 at Dumfries one of the witnesses was Cudbert Greir, (Merchant burgess) of Dumfries.Agnes Grierson died 3rd February, 1664 ~ Will confirmed 26th January, 1665.She owned the lands of Kirkbride in Keir, adjacent to the lands of Fleuchlarg (have not included all the page references).

  • Agnes Grierson & John Laurie had issue known, one, viz.:
  • Note: "Robert Laurie, born c1641; died 1698; eldest son of John Laurie, inherited the family's ambitious streak. At 16 years of age he wrote a moralistic story about a thief and also some Latin verses. He was obviously making plans for the future when signing Dux Robertus Laurie and Roi Robertus Laurie Est. several times in different styles. Sadly the book was lost during the 1950's. He was knighted on the 21st March 1685 by King James 7th of Scotland, James 2nd of England." (Moniaive & The Parish of Glencairn (visitors' booklet) by Jacquie Field, 1989, p. 14.)He married Mary Dalzell & had issue known, two, viz.: (1) Mary Laurie, (2) Agnes Laurie.
