Guild Brother of Dundee, gratis.

The estate of Stratlunartine, near Dundee, was in the possession of the WiNTOUN family early in the sixteenth century, and remained in their hands till the middle of the eighteenth century. The name appears frequently in Brieves of Inquest during that period, though the WiNTOUNS do not seem to have taken a leading part in political affairs. Thomas Wintoun, whose name is entered here, was the son of Andrew Wintoun and Elizabeth, daughter of James Scrymgeour of Balbeuchly. He was a Justice of the Peace for Forfarshire in 1616, at the time of the visit of James VI. to Scotland, and was one of the Forfar Barons who met the King at Kinnaird Castle at that date. His town residence stood at the south-west corner of the Vault, Dundee, and is still known by the name of " Strathmartine's Lodging." It is one of the most ornate of the urban residences of the neighbouring gentry that have survived to the present da^-.
