[14] May 1529: Instrument narrating that John Mur of Cald(well) obliged himself and his heirs to fulfil all things specified in a contract of marriage between him and Dame Jonet Stewart, lady of Culzeane, and also in letters of obligation made to Dame Jonet, Egidia Kennedy and Jonet K., daughters of Dame Jonet ; moreover, he obliges himself to reform and better the said contract and obligation in any point or points if it seem expedient to Dame Jonet, by the advice of lawyers. !4 May 1529: Instrument narrating that Hugh, Earl of Eglintoun, superior of the lands of Thorntoun, affirmed and approved these grants,"for the natural affection he has towards her," contained in a charter of liferent of the ten-merk lands of Thorntoun made by the said Earl to Dame Jonet Stewart, relict of the late John Kennedy of Culzean, Knight, notwithstanding an erasure of the same in the eighth line of said charter from the head expressly contained, which words were erased in presence of the Earl, and John Mur of Caldwell likewise approved the same words and the erasure of the same. 14 May 1529: Instrument to the effect that Archibald (Stewart), attorney for said Jonet, obliges himself on her behalf, if any reason shall be found between her and John Mure of Caldwell for any cause now not manifest, to obtain a lawful dispensation from the Apostolic See at the cost of said Dame Jonet, or at least to again resign the ten-merk lands of Thorntoun, which she has in liferent, in the hands of the superior in favour of the said John M. of Caldwell. 13 May 1592: Renunciation by Hugh Kennedy now of Girvanmains to Thomas Kennedy son and apparent heir of Sir Thomas Kennedy of Culean Knight, by which for certain sums of money paid to him the said Hugh Kennedy by Mr David Makgill of Cranston-riddel Advocate to our Sovereign Lord, in behalf of the said Thomas Kennedy his oy (grandson) he renounces, quit-claims and overgives to the said Thomas Kennedy his heirs and assignees, all right title and interest which he said Hugh Kennedy had to the 20 pound land of Culean, with the manor place woods and fishings thereof, and ratifies and approves the Charter of the same (No. preceding) granted by Margaret Kennedy his mother relict of Gilbert Kennedy of Girvanmains his father to the said Thomas Kennedy and his aforesaid, in the whole heads, articles, and clauses and obliges him to warrand the same both from his own and the proper facts and deeds of his said Umquhil father - and whereas the merk land of Dunbog, which is part of the said 20 pound land of Culean was disponed by Elizabeth Kennedy relict of [ ] Kennedy of Culean to Umquhil Janet Stewart relict of Sir John Kennedy of Culean Knight her heirs and assignees, and that the right of the said merk land now pertains to him the said Hugh Kennedy as heir of his said Umquhil father, therefore he obliges him to warrand the said merk land of Dunbog to the said Thomas Kennedy and his aforesaid, from the alienation thereof by the said Umquhil Janet Stewart.
