Fake Pedigree or Disputed Ancestry. Proposition 1

The identity of Lady Margaret Hamilton, here treated, is uncertain. It has been claimed that she was the daughter of James Hamilton, Duke of Chatellerault, and Lady Margaret Douglas, but no proof is offered. Paden/Peden Family History: Lady Margaret Hamilton Moreover, the Scots Peerage account of the Duke's family does not recognise the existence of a daughter named Margaret. Scots Peerage IV: 370 According to John Anderson's Memoirs, the Duke did have a daughter named Margaret. but Anderson says that she married Alexander, Lord Gordon. Hamilton Memoirs, p. 118 The Scots Peerage account casts doubt upon this identification, saying that it was actually Lady Barbara Hamilton who married Alexander, Lord Gordon, as her first husband, and thereafter, as her second husband, James, Lord Fleming. It has also been claimed that Lady Margaret Hamilton, here treated, was the daughter of Sir James Hamilton III and Janet Beaton, but no proof is offered. Find A Grave: Margaret Hamilton The identity of James Hamilton III is not immediately obvious from the Find A Grave account but it would seem that the man is question is James Hamilton, Earl of Arran. The Earl did have a bastard daughter named Margaret, by Beatrix Drummond, but it would appear that she married Andrew Stewart, Lord Avondale. Scots Peerage IV: 364 John Anderson does not mention a daughter named Margaret in his account of the Duke's family. Hamilton Memoirs, p. 82
