Apprenticed about 1791 to Aaron Chapin in Hartford, CT. He was a partner from 1828 to 1838 with Aaron Chapin in Hartford CT as A. CHAPIN & SON. Listed in the 1828 city directory at 45 Main Street. Though the primary concern of the business was cabinetmaking, advertisements indicate that they continued silver work and watchmaking.

Laertes married Laura Colton on 5 Jul 1813 in Hartford CT. (Laura Colton was born on 2 May 1788 in Hartford CT and died on 18 Sep 1854 in New Haven CT.)

1 Dea. Aaron Chapin, a native of Chicopee, Mass., removed to Hartford in early life, and established himself in the cabinet making business. His only son, Laertes Chapin, father of President Aaron L. Chapin, D.D of Beloit College toward the close the last century, became partner with his father, and the firm was known also, for long years, as the firm of Aaron Chapin & Son, known also for the honesty and thoroughness of their work. Aaron Chapin was deacon of the First Church of Hartford from 1813 to his death in 1838.
