About Laura May Saindon
Laura was employed during her younger years as a store cashier or clerk and as a parts inspector in a spark plug manufacturing operation. She resided in Hobart, Indiana; Box Butte, Nebraska; Painsville, Willard, and Toledo, Ohio; Garnet, Kansas; Pacoima, California; San Antonia, Texas; Glendale, California (winters until late in life); and with her son Virgil in Sturgis and Battle Creek, Michigan. She was active in the Daughters of the Union Veterans, particularly in California, the Women's Relief Corps, and the Women's Christian Temperance Union and a member of the Methodist Church.
In the 1940's, she had a total enucleation (removal) of her right eye due to cancer. She suffered from chronic bronchitis, heart trouble, and was in congestive heart failure for several months before her death. She died at Virgil's family home.
Laura owned a chest of drawers built by her father. It had an inlaid-wood front. The chest was passed on to her granddaughter Doris Benedict and eventually to Doris's daughter, Denise (Miller) Jackowski. Laura also owned a gold broach-type Lady Elgin watch, given to her by her father. This was passed on to her son Virgil and is now in the possession of Mary Benedict Grindol.
