He lost his right arm due to gangrene at a young age and lost more than one school year due to this. He worked as a bookkeeper for Asher and Asher, an agent for African Gate and Fence. He inherited the business when old man Alan Asher died, on condition he never sold the business. When Laurie retired, he closed the agency down. He died of colon cancer in hospital in Port Elizabeth.
When Laurie married Miemie, they bought the piece of ground (20 Murray Street in Graaff Reinet) that was next to the property of his parents (18 Murray Street) and built their house there. Miemie only sold this property after a back operation went wrong (she ended up being an invalid) in 1967 and she spent the rest of her life living with her children, Eileen, Cedric (& wife Joey) and Errol (& wife Ria), in turns.
She eventually moved into Avondrus Old Aged Home in Arcon Park in Vereeniging, where she died in 1981.
