Lauren (28), was beaten and stabbed to death by her gardener on 06/09/2007 at her home in Sunningdale, Durban, KZN. The gardener had hit Lauren over the head several times with a heavy object, and also stabbed numerous times with a knife.

  • A gardener who killed a young mother and leaves her two-month-old baby boy next to her body and fled, was sentenced to 30 years in prison in the Durban High Court on Tuesday.
  • Makhele Johnson Thabete (22), who committed the murder, had been on the run for about a year before he surrendered to the police earlier this month. In court it was heard that Thabete had before the murder worked at the Oliviers every Thursday for about a month.
  • After the murder, he placed her baby next to her body and fled with R70, an MP3 player and a mobile phone.
  • Judge Mohini Muragasen sentenced Thabete to 25 years in prison for murder, as well as a further five years for theft.
