Laverne Cox

Laverne Cox is a two-time Emmy-nominated actress and Emmy-winning producer. She is best known for her work on the critically acclaimed Netflix original series, "Orange is The New Black," where she plays the ground breaking role of Sophia Burset. Laverne is the first Trans woman of color to have a leading role on a mainstream scripted television show, and the first openly Trans person to be nominated for an Emmy in acting category. She is an award winning LGBT advocate.

Family

A classically trained dancer, Laverne Cox was born in Mobile, Alabama and was raised by a single mother and grandmother within the AME Zion church. She has an identical twin brother, M Lamar, who portrays the pre-transitioning Sophia (as Marcus) in Orange Is the New Black.

She traced her family’s roots on the television show, “Who Do You Think You Are?”, premiering May 21, 2018.
