In April 1899, Lawson's father, Walter Martin, died. In 1900, Lawson, as a 10 year old boy, was living in his grandmother's household, Levena Martin, with his mother, Susie Martin, and siblings, Elijah and Ardelia Martin in Gell Bay, Bulloch County, Georgia.
