About Lazar Kohn-Zerkowitz

Due to his lack of standing as a younger son, Eleazer Kohn-Zerkowitz left Moravia about 1778 or 1779, and crossed the border into Hungary. He settled in Trencin City where he is consistently seen as "Lazar Kohn" (although once as "Lazarus Kohn"). His sons, Leopold and Nathan, were also known exclusively as "Kohn". It wasn't until after their deaths that their children and descendants resumed the use of "Kohn-Zerkowitz", and then later, just "Zerkowitz".

Lazar sold jewels in the center of Trencin and attained enough wealth to purchase his own residence in Trencin City. He and his family occupied household #9 in Trencin's Jewish section. He was married about 1781 to Chaja Pick, and is seen living in the Pick household iwhen the 1781 Jewish census was taken.

Chaja d. in Trencin, c.Jan 1785. Lazar soon remarried -- about June 1785 to Finkel, known as "Fani", b. c1760. In February and March 1786, they were living back near Lazar's native town, in Trebitsch, Moravia. A son Mordechai was b. to them there on 19 Mar 1786. In Trebic records, Lazar is listed as "Elias Lobl Kohn". Soon thereafter, however, they returned to Tencin.

Lazar Kohn is listed in the 1795, 1798, and 1808 censuses of Trencin City, but is not seen after that.

His name – “Lasar Kohn” – appears on a 1795 list of Jews who suffered losses from the deadly fire that destroyed much of Trencin’s inner city (as well as the castle) in 1790.

According to family lore, Lazar met his death (circa 1817) when he was robbed and murdered on the outskirts of Trencin City as he was returning to that area "from the Leipzig Fair". According to Emil Zerk's notes: "My great-grandfather, from Trencin, was a jeweler. On a ride from Leipzig, Germany to take gold along, he was murdered."
