About Lazarus Eliezer Phillips

Lazarus was born c.1806 in Holland - Note: at that time the family did not have a formal 'surname', hence no 'Birth Surname' entered on this Geni record. He died on 19th January 1892 and was buried on the next day at West Ham Jewish Cemetery, alongside his 2nd wife Leah who died on 11th December 1864. His Hebrew name was 'Eliezer Lazer' and nicknamed 'Froom Leizer' (a reference to his devout nature), as mentioned in his obituary and on his tombstone. His father was 'Philip Phillips' otherwise 'Uri Feiss', from Amsterdam and Frankfurt. An Obituary was published in The Jewish Chronicle (22nd Jan 1892) in which it was stated that Lazarus was the son of a former Dayan of Amsterdam, Rabbi Uri. The Hebrew reference to his father that appears on Lazarus's headstone is מהור״ר אורי (and on his brother Lewis's headstone: מור״ר אורי פייס). The English inscription on his brother Lewis's gravestone states that he was the youngest son of The Reverend Phillip Phillips, Rabbi of Frankfurt-on-the-Maine. These mentions of Amsterdam and Frankfurt suggest that the family were connected with both places and one assumes lived in both.

Lazarus Phillips married his 1st wife Esther in London on 5th March 1828. Her father was a Sephardi - Abraham Rodrigues. Their son Rev. Philip Phillips was born in December 1828. Esther appears to have died the following year, perhaps as a result of delayed complications arising from childbirth. The burial register of The Great Synagogue in London records that Esther Phillips, wife of Lazer son of Feis, was buried on 11th October 1829; the burial record gives an address of Goulston Square in Whitechapel - this may have been the place she died or the address where the family lived. Lazarus, widowed, married her sister Leah (Louisa) on 26 May 1831.
