About Leah Rachel Ross Radford

Rachel had been born in Gibson County Tennessee, the daughter of Richard Smith and Dianah Braswell. In 1837 she had married Andrew Jackson Ross. They had two sons James Richard Ross and Melvin Ross. Andrew died in a logging accident leaving her as a young widow. The extended Ross and Smith families joined the Mormon Church and moved to Nauvoo. Rachel and John were married 6 April 1846 in Nauvoo.

History - Leah Smith was born in Tennessee, November 30, 1822. She married to Jackson Ross at Dier County Tennessee in 1838. (Jackson Ross was born at Dier County, Tennessee in 1815). This couple had two sons. James Richard Ross was the first child born November 18, 1839, at Dier County, Tennessee. Melvin Ross was the second child born September 24, 1843 at Dier County, Tennessee. Their father, Jackson Ross. died in Dier County in 1842, leaving Leah Smith Ross a widow with two small sons, James Richard 3 years old, and Melvin 1 year old. When the boys were eleven and eight years old they crossed plains in 1849 using an oxen team and landed in the Salt Lake Valley, Utah in 1850.

James Richard Ross married Susan Elizabeth Potter, November 18, 1862 at Payson, Utah. To this union seven boys and two girls were born. He died Aug 14, 1900, on what is known as Butler Island or Rudy Ward. He was buried at Shelton Cemetery in Ririe, Idaho. Susan Elizabeth Potter was born June 3, 1843 in Hancock County, Illinois and died in 1920 at Albion, Idaho.

Melvin Ross married his first wife Julia Elizabeth Smith November 18, 1862 at Heber City, Wasatch County, Utah. To his union was born four boys and three girls. Julia died about November 1878. Melvin married again to Mary Ellen Haddon July 18, 1879 at Lemington, Millard County, Utah. To this union was born four girls and two boys. Father Melvin Ross died November 29, 1920 at American Falls, Power County, Idaho and is buried at the Shelton Cemetery in Ririe, Idaho. Mary Ellen Hadden Ross died December 19, 1925 at Filer, Idaho and is also buried at the Shelton Cemetery in Ririe, Idaho.
