About Leib Milgraum
Marriage record in 1899, after many children were born. Possibly this was when they finally got their civil marriage finalized. Marriage record confirms parents and his birth of 1854. Married in Rzeszow by Rabbi Chaim Wolf Ellenbogen. https://szukajwarchiwach.pl/59/533/0/-/4/str/1/13/15/LsdP83O2DjNW5N...
Death record for 1928 in Swilcza. This matches calligraphy on back of photograph. Death certificate lists 74 years of age.
Simcha State says in the name of her grandmother Reba that Leibish had a store in his house along with a shul. The daughters would help out with the store until they got married. Leibish asked his rabbi if he should also go to America, like his children were doing. His rabbi answered him, "If you want to die like a king, you'll stay here." And he referred to the practice of carrying a body to the cemetery with pall bearers (by hand). This is the way that important people are buried. In America, bodies were carted off to the cemetery by horse carriage. This was seen to be an insult.
Yehuda Meir's full Hebrew name is on his daughter Reba Alter's headstone, but just his Yiddish name Leib (pronounced "L-eye-b") is on his son Abraham Milgraum's headstone. Also his name Leibush is on a piece of calligraphy done with his and his wife's name after their death. Sylvie Friedman named her son Larry "Yehuda Meir" at bris. Sylvie says that she asked her mother what her father's Hebrew name was: Yehuda Meir.
Swilcza population according to 1921 Poland census had 2,551 residents, including 58 Jewish souls. This means that in 1921, after most of the Milgraum children had left to America, Leib and his wife were some of very few Jews in town.
Residence:
- Swilcza P. Mororola Galicia (per Chava Zinn's immigration papers). Looking on the map, there is a subdivision of Swilcza called "Mrowla." I wonder if this is where they lived.
