About Lemuel West Keaton
Lemuel West Keaton was the husband of Martha Margaret Maret; father of 11 children (2 died in infancy). Obituary: Winchester Herald, 8 January 1892 -- Lemuel W. Keaton was born in North Carolina, Aug. 5th, 1819, and died in Winchester, Kans. December 31st, 1891. He has lived in five other states, Illinois, Kentucky, Oregon, California and Missouri. Being a Union man it became too disagreeable to longer remain in Missouri so he came to Kansas in ‘64, his home since. In 1858 he united in marriage with Martha M. Maret, who shared the blessings of his home until 1880. Eleven children are fruits of this union, eight of whom are still living. He leaves three grandchildren.
Mr. Keaton has been a great sufferer for years. His late illness was of such a nature as to prevent lying down to rest; so he kept his chair, and awaited his change with great patience. During his sickness he told me the mistake of his life had been in neglecting his salvation in youth, but for some time past he had been a daily petitioner at the throne of grace, and now had the assurance of his acceptance as a child of God.
The funeral services were held on New Years day, in the M. E. Church. Text, Amos 5:8–"Seek Him–who turneth the shadow of death into morning–The Lord is his name." The remains were interred in Hull cemetery, north of town.
