At Lake Maxinkuckee, yesterday afternoon, the cottages of A. J. Murdock, W. T. Wilson, W. H. Snider, Frank Rice, George B. Forgy and L. S Purcell, of this city, and that of W. R. Scott, of Danville, Il., were destroyed by fire. Owing; to light insurance and the fact that the cottages were all furnished, the loss, will probably reach $10,000. the origin of the fire is unknown
The flames started in Mr. Scott's cottage and swept the others away in quick succession.
All but the Rice and Purcell cottages had been closed for the season. Mrs. E. S. Rice and Mrs. G. C. Taber were at the Rice cottage, and Mrs. L. S. Purcell and some friends at the Purcell cottage.
The cottages were situated in a grove on a high bluff and were among the prettiest on the lake - 21 Sep 1892
Copied from Volume 7, No 3, P 139 of July 1978 issue of THE PURCELL GENEALOGICAL JOURNAL.
The following was taken from ”History of Cass County, Indiana” Edited by Thomas B. Helm Brant & Fuller, Chicago, 1886 City of Logansport:
The subject of this sketch was born in Urbana, Ohio, 12 Feb 1828, and is the only son (not correct) of Alfred and Mary (Hill) Purcell, natives respectively, of Kentucky and Ohio.
Mr. Purcell spent his youth in Urbana, received a good English education in the schools of the city, and at the age of fourteen went with his parents to Muscatine, Iowa, where he pursued his studies until eighteen years of age.
On quitting school he engaged to learn the saddlery and harness trade, at which he served a four year apprenticeship, after which he followed the business about one year.
In 1851 he engaged as a brakeman on the old Sandusky & Cleveland Railroad, and one year later abandoned railroading and began selling goods in Urbana, Ohio, which business he continued until 1853. From 1853 till 1856 he was ticket and freight agent at Urbana for the Columbus, Piqua & Indiana Railroad, and in the latter year engaged in farming, which he carried on with fair success until 1858. He then returned to railroading, and from 1858 until 1864 served as conductor on what is now the Pan Handle Road, running between Columbus and Indianapolis. In 1864 he left the road, and again engaged in agricultural pursuits in Champaign County, Ohio, but four years later, left the farm for his former business, and from the Year 1868 until 1872 was fuel agent on the same line upon which he had previously run as conductor. He was road master on the same division from 1872 till 1874, and from 1875 until 1886 held the responsible position of stock, fuel and claim agent for the Chicago, St Louis & Pacific Railroad, with headquarters at Logansport, Ind. Mr. Purcell was a painstaking official, and during his long period of railroading had the unbounded confidence of his employers.
He was married three times: the first time in May 1853, to Miss Amanda Powell of Champaign County, Ohio who died in 1858. Two children were born to this union: William W. and Elijah Purcell. Mr. Purcell's second marriage was solemnized in 1861, with Mrs. Celestine (Chapman) Howard, of Vermont, by whom he had two children: Harry C. and Charles H. Mrs. Purcell died 1877.
In May 1882, Mr. Purcell was married to Mrs. Sarah Siddons Greene.
Mr. Purcell was a Republican in politics but not a partisan in the sense of seeking office. -

"News has been received here of the death at Logansport of Mr. L. S. Purcel. He died at his home in that city yesterday morning at 6:15 and the funeral will occur tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock. He was one of the best known railroad men in the west, as familiar a figure at all stations as Mr. Muier himself. He had been in the employ of the Pennsylvania company since 1850 as claim agent and was retired last year. He was one of the oldest claim agents in the service. He was the father of the Purcell boys of this city, all of whom are railroad men in the line of promotion. They have gone to Logansport today."
