About Len Mayer
Trained at Hendon Flying School in 1916 before joining Royal Flying Corps as a Flying Officer.Stationed in Malta at Kalafrana - and engaged largely on reconnaissance particularly of german submarines. Awarded with DSO and DFC.After demobilisation he spent many weekends flying light aircraft and was particularly interested in flying boats. He used his gratuity to set up a road haulage business in partnership with brother Reg with additional financial backing from father J.T. Operating second-hand vehicles meant that weekends were spent on repair work. Len became increasingly fed up with doing long hours of work for subsistence wages while J.T.as the sleeping partner took the profits! So in 1927 Len left the business to become a sales representative for Russian Oil Products. Len died after a tragic flying accident during a demonstration for a hospital charity in Sheffield at the age of 34. Len was a Masonic Lodge member and raced at Brooklands several times.
