Lenard (41), an Inspector at the Lyttelton police station was shot dead during an armed robbery, when 15 heavily armed men stormed at a warehouse shopping complex in Troyeville on Sunday 16th May 2004. He was off-duty with his Police friends that day when the robbery took place.
He was with his friends Inspectors Paul Nel "Kat" (34), and Johannes Stephanus Halgreen 'Hallies' (34), a member of the Pretoria Area Crime Combating Unit (ACCU) who were also killed. Inspector Roedolf Johannes Peens (28), of the Pretoria VIP Unit, was critically injured in the attack as was a shop owner.

- Johannesburg detectives arrested six men connected to the murder. A number of the males arrested were out on bail at the time, on various charges, including armed robbery, assault and attempted murder. Superintendent Chris Wilkens said the men were arrested at their homes in Yeoville and Alexandra after a tip-off from the community. Police seized 10 firearms, two vehicles and ammunition.
