<LEO G. CARROLL>

<Film character actor>

Leo G. Carroll, the British-born actor who played spymaster Mr Waverley in 'The Man from UNCLE' television series, has died at the age of 80.

Carroll, whose career began on the stage in London, achieved his greatest prominence on American television, first as a suburban banker, Cosmo Topper, in the 'Topper' series, and then as the acerbic, no-nonsense head of a super-secret organization in the 'UNCLE' series.

He made his stage debut in London in 1911 in 'The Prisoner of Zenda', and was wounded serving in the British infantry in the First World War. After the war he went to the United States, where he starred in Broadway classics such as 'The Late George Apley', 'Angel Street' and 'The Druid Circle'. His film parts included performances in 'Rebecca', 'Spellbound', 'Clive of India' and the original production of 'Wuthering Heights'. He had made the United States his home since 1924 but retained British citizenship.
