About Leo George Tybora
Winona Republican-Herald newspaper (21 Jul 1914) Leo Tybora Meets Death When Hit by North Bound Fast Mail Train on Sunday Noon. One of the first victims of the Milwaukee Railway's double track through Winona is Leo Tybora, nine-year-old son of Frank Tybora, 1000 East King street, was struck by the northbound noon passenger train in the East End about 11:30 yesterday and died at 5 o'clock this morning from his injuries. His skull was fractured and he also received a bad cut about an inch and a half long on the left temple. The lad had been swimming in the river at the foot of Wall street with James Prondzinski, nine, Walter Prondzinski, ten, Peter Wachowiac, seven, and Joseph Kunda, seven, and coming to the railway track from the river near Buchanan street and stopped to watch an eastbound passenger train as it went by. They climbed upon the westbound track and in so doing failed to hear the approaching passenger train in time to save the boy's life. The engineer whistled and stopped within one half a train length after the accident occurred. According to versions of the accident as made by trainmen at the depot the boys got out of the way of one train only to step in the path of the other, but Tybora was the only one who did not escape. Internal injuries caused death. He did not recover consciousness. Three years ago his fourteen year old brother was killed by a train in the East End. Besides his parents he is survived by three brothers and five sisters. Mr. Tybora is a stone mason. Funeral-services will be held at 9 o'clock Wednesday morning at St. Stanislaus church and interment will be made at St. Mary's cemetery.
