About Leo Earl Smith

Leo Earl Smith was born April 8, 1884, at Provo Utah. He was the youngest son of James and Christeena Penrod Smith. His father had two wives. One home was on Third West, just off Center Street. Aunt Janie Duke Smith, as a second family called her, had nine children: James Duke, John William, Sarah Ann, Maria, Richard, Almira, Deanah, Olive Minerva and Nellie. The second wife, Leo's mother, lived on the Twelfth North property. They had Christeena, David, Joseph Albert, James Ephraim, Abraham Lewis, Temperance, Elizabeth, Thomas Jay, Minnie and Leo Earl.

His childhood memories are very wonderful. His home was surrounded by tall trees which branched together and almost made a roof over his home. In each corner of the lot was a different kind of fruit tree. In front was a tree that had been grafted and it had both red and white apples on it. They always had a big garden, which was surrounded on all sides by a ditch. There was a cellar with a sandstone floor in it. In one corner of the cellar was a spring and a little ditch ran all around the sandstone floor. His mother always grew beautiful flowers.

Nancy Ella Shelton Smith was born on April 24, 1885, in Heber, Utah. She was the daughter of James Alfred and Sarah Jane McDonald Shelton, and also the eldest child. Her brothers and sisters are; Charles, Leslie, Eva, Jennie, Dora, Leland, Earl, Clyde and Grant. The family moved to Daniel, Wasatch County, Utah.

Leo and Ella Shelton were married on December 13, 1905, in the Salt Lake Temple. They made their home in Provo two years. Here Delsa Smith Price and Alfred Earl Smith were born. Then they moved to Daniel, where six more children were born: Eva Smith Gines, Deon Smith McKnight, Jay L. Smith, Nola Smith Luke, Nyle Smith Bird and Dean Smith. They have 32 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

They lived in Daniel and helped pioneer and develop it. They helped clear the sagebrush, put in the culinary water, electric lights, telephone, and irrigation water and build the Church house and whatever else was to be done. Their lives have influenced many in the community.
