About Leonard Mitchell Shifflett

L. M. Shifflett Dies At Home, retired Farmer of Near Harrisonburg, Ill Short Time - Leonard Mitchell Shifflett, 69, retired farmer and a resident of the Harrisonburg community for the past thirteen years, died Thursday evening at 6:15 at his home. Mr. Shifflett had been in failing health for the past six years but as able to assume his normal activities and it was Sunday morning when he suffered from a cerebral hemorrhage. After this attack no hope was held for his recovery. Born on July 19, 1880, Mr. Shifflett was the son of the late Syanthy Ann Morris and Brazile Mitchell Shifflett. He was born in Augusta County at a place called Piedmont near New Hope and there he spent the first fifteen years of his life before moving to the McGaheysville community. Married in October 1901 to Miss Amanda Scretha Shifflett of McGaheysville at the old J. L. Hopkins home. Mr. Shifflett was engaged in farming in this community until thirteen years ago. Mr. Shifflett was a member of the Christian Church and will be remembered as a good neighbor who was always ready to return good for evil or good for good which ever the case may be. His primary interests other than his family was centered around the tilling of the soil which he loved so much. Besides his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Nina Royer, of Harrisonburg; four sons, Everett R., James T., and Samuel B. Shifflett, all of Harrisonburg; and Otho W. Shifflett, Palmyra, Pa., two sisters, Mrs. Florence Shifflett, McGaheysville and Mrs. Edith Shifflett, Baltimore, Md., two brothers, C. M. Shifflett, Elkton, and O. B. Shifflett, Harrisonburg. One sister and two brothers preceded him in death some years ago. Sixteen grandchildren and three great grandchildren also survive. the body is now at the Lindsey Funeral Home in Harrisonburg pending final funeral arrangements but the funeral will probably be sometime Sunday with the following as pallbearers: E. B. Shoemaker, L. O. Myers, A. C. Moubray, E. L. Miller, G. G. Bowman, and O. J. Berry. burial will be in the family lot in the McGaheysville cemetery.
