Leonard Stump (sometimes called Leonard Stump Jr.) was born about 1766 in Hampshire, Virginia (now Hardy, West Virginia). His parents were Michael Stump II and Sarah Hughes Stump. He had eight siblings all born in Hampshire Virginia: Michael III, b: 1. 4 FEB 1764, who married Magdalina Richards; Catherine b: 1777, who married George Whitecotton; Elizabeth b: ABT 1779, who married Isaac N. About 1788, Leonard Stump Jr. married Elizabeth See, daughter of George See and Christiana Bogart. (This Elizabeth See was the first cousin of Catherine Elizabeth See, daughter of Michael Adam See and Barbara Rebecca Harness, who married Leonard’s UNCLE Leonard Stump, b. 1749, sometimes called Leonard Stump Sr.).

Leonard Stump Jr. and Elizabeth See Stump had ten children, all born in Hardy, Virginia: Phoebe b: 1789, who married Isaac Neff; John b. ABT 1791, who married Prudence Parsons; Michael See b: ABT 1793, who married Elizabeth Ann Burgoyne; Dorothy b: JUN 1796, who married John G. Paul Hardman, in his self-published manuscript The Four Michaels, reports his understanding of Leonard Stump’s enlistment in the War of 1812, rising to the rank of Captain, and subsequently dying in 1826. J. W. Neff, posting on RootWeb’s WorldConnect Project: Carpenter, Powell and Their Connections notes an 1819 Hardy County court record’s reference to Leonard’s disappearance after undertaking a trip to the west, from which he apparently did not return.

Leonard Stump Jr. does appear in the 1820 U.S. Census in Hardy, Virginia with nine listed in his fanily. Apparently the family included him in the count, anticipating his return.

But by 1826, Leonard Stump Jr. was assumed to have died intestate, and Hardy County documents record the settlement of his estate: September 1, 1826, Sale of property belonging to the estate of Captain Leonard Stump, dec. December 2, 1826: Inventory of estate of Captain Leonard Stump Further court documents dealing with disposition of the estate appear in other Hardy County Court records, including Hardy Co Deed Bk 20 p 447 1848, Hardy Co Deed Bk 21 p 25, 1848, Bk 23 p 86, 1850, Bk 23 p 192, 1852

A portion of property was set aside as dower land for Leonard’s widow, Elizabeth. The remaining land was divided into ten portions and went to each of the ten children of Leonard and Elizabeth, all of whom are listed with their respective spouses.

There is confusion between Elizabeth See (1754-aft. 1827) who md. a different Leonard Stump Jr. (1771-1827) and her cousin, Catherine See (1754-1827) md Leonard Stump Sr.(1749-1828). https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/See-1

Catherine See was the daughter of Michael and Barbara (Harness) See and her cousin Elizabeth See was the daughter of George and Christina (Bogard) See. Michael and George were brothers.

The two Leonard Stumps were uncle and nephew. Leonard Sr. was son of Michael and Anna Catherine (Neff) Stump, and Leonard Jr. was the son of Michael Stump, Jr. Michael Jr. was brother of Leonard Sr.

Bill Neff explains there were two Leonard Stumps (uncle and nephew) who married two See cousins (Catherine d/o Michael and Elizabeth d/o of George respectively.) His information was based on Hardy land and estate records.

Bill Neff points out there were several Leonard Stumps and two (uncle and nephew) married two See cousins. Leonard-2 (Michael-1) m. Catherine "Kate" See-3 (Michael-2, George-1) whereas his nephew, Leonard-3 (Michael, Jr.-2, Michael-1) m. Elizabeth See-3 (George-2, George-1). Kate and Elizabeth were 1st cousins.
