Kegel Family history

NAME: The term "Kegel" in German means Pin or Cone. Often the name is used in Bowling terminology.[kwill-1.ged] Name: German - Leonhart Kegel English - Leonard Cagle

Immigration: 1732 Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

1. The Kegel surname history is of the ancient Pomerania family tracing its ancestry as a family of Teutonic origin before the year 1100 and appears first in the ancient records in Pomerania. The original Cagle surname is an ancient Mayo family tracing its ancestry of Irish origin before the year 1100 and appears first in the ancient records in Mayo.

2. Margarette Cagle Fields recorded the following about Leonhart as told to her by her parents, Joseph Tilden Cagle and Alice Robenia Fields: "They left Rotterdam in the early 1700's. Their ship docked in Ireland to take on additional passengers and replenish their food supply and fresh water before continuing their long trip to their new home. Their ship docked in Pennsylvania where they planned to obtain land and put down roots. However, after several years and obtaining land in the western part of Pennsylvania, they decided to leave and move south to the Piedmont section of North Carolina where some stayed and others migrated west to the mountains. Joseph spoke of a Leonard Cagle, his great-great-grandfather Valentine, his grandfather Henry Washington Cagle, his father Henry Washington "Wash" Cagle, their families, etc."

3. According to information provided to Margarette by John Cagle, editor of "The Cagle Journal", Leonhart left the Dutch port of Rotterdam, September 25, 1732 on the British ship "Loyal Judith". He arrived in Pennsylvania where he lived a number of years in Old Philadelphia County. In 1750 he moved westward to Old Lancaster County (in the part that became Berks County in 1752) and acquired land from the state.

4. Pennsylvania State Archives at Harrisburg record "Leonard Cagle", as Leonhart apparently had by then changed the spelling of his given and last name, applying for Land Warrant number 1-28-211 for 146 1/2 acres of land in Lancaster County. The land was duly assigned and allowed to him November 5, 1750. He did not follow through on the warrant to gain permanent title because ca 1754 his family left Pennsylvania and moved southward into North Carolina. Eventually, in 1791, the land was re surveyed and divided into three tracts and claimed by new owners.

5. Leonard's family traveled south with the Moravians (religious denomination) arriving in the fall of 1754 apparently about the time of his death.

LEONARD CAGLE also known as Leonard Kegel and Leonhart Kegel, was born 1684 in Palatine Region, Germany, and died 1754 in Berk County, PA.

Leonhart Kegel, later known as Leonard Cagle, wa born 1684, in Rhenish Palatine, Germany. Oral tradition, and records, show he was our ancestor. He migrated down the Rhine River to Holland. They sailed from Rotterdam, Holland in 1732 on the ship "Loral Judith" and arrived at Philadelphia, PA., on the 25th of September of that year. Leonard gave his age as 48, traveling with his wife, Susana Kegel of Obermehlingen Germany, and children (but did not name them).

Baptismal records show son of Leonard and Susanna, Johan Theobald Kegel, was baptized in 1728, born April 29, 1728. Church records also state the confirmation of Maria Margareta, the daughter of Leonard and his deceased wife, Maria Elizabeth. Maria Margareta was 14 years old (information taken from LDS records).

He acquired land in what is now Berks County, PA in 1737. He is last know to have appeared in Berks County, PA in 1754 at the age of 70. It is not known if he migrated to North Carolina with his sons in 1755, or died in PA. It is believed his son John "Dutchman" began to appear in records in Orange County by 1755. Family tradition indicates that they came down the Great Pennsylvania Wagon Road in a wagon train headed by the Moravian Brothers from Bethlehem, PA.

(Note) The Cagle pioneers of North Carolina, it is believed, were a group of brothers, some five or more, left their homes near Reading, Berks County, PA, in the early 1750's, and settled in the central part of North Carolina by the year 1755. The earliest land recorded was dated February 3, 1764 by John Kegill from James Cheney for 120 acres in Old Cumberland County at the fork of Bear and Cabin Creeks and was called "Hasells Neck" Plantation.

From the record book of the Rev. Daniel Schumacher, a German minister in Berk County, PA, marriage records, written in German script:

25 December 1754: Johannes Koegell, Oley and Johanetta Hart, Oley
