Lipot Aschner ran the Tungsram Lighting factory in Budapest and was also one of the first to introduce football into Hungary as a means of workers recreation. He also fostered Swimming and Tennis. Around 1940, when he was told he could only have 5% Jews in his workforce, instead of sacking loyal employees, he significantly increased the number of non Jewish workers in lesser positions. He was eventually arrested, his house and effects in Apostal ut were commandeered by Adolf Eichmann, and he was sent to Multhausen. A ransom note was subsequently passed to the Tungsram parent company, and a substantial sum was paid into a Swiss bank account. It is said that Lipot fully appreciated the injustice when he alone was escorted from the camp and taken over the border into Switzerland where he lived out the war. The post war regime in Hungary found they could not run the Tungsram factory without him, so he was invited back and continued working there until his death in 1952.
