About Leopold Francis Melvill
He came to the Transvaal in 1876 and acted as a clerk to the Colonial Treasury, Pretoria.
With the outbreak of the AngloBoer War in 1880 he joined the Pretoria Carbineers and was taken prisoner on the 16th December 1880 but released soon after. He was wounded in the foot, with his horse being shot from beneath him. For this he was mentioned in dispatches. After the war Leopold left Pretoria and joined the Standard Bank in Kimberley. In 1886 he went to work in Barberton as an accountant and secretary of companies. In 1889 he went to live in Johannesburg. In June 1892 he married and he and Mary Kate White had a daughter and 3 sons. He belonged to various Clubs and lived at Karl Street, Jeppestown.
