About Leroy F. Stecklein

Leroy F. Stecklein, 70, Osawatomie, Kansas, died Sunday, November 8, 2020 at KU Medical Center.

He was born July 23, 1950 in Hays, Kansas, the eighth of nine children born to Joseph C. and Catherine (Wasinger) Stecklein. Leroy grew up in Hays and graduated from Hays High School in 1968. After high school, Leroy was drafted into the United States Army and was honorably discharged after three years. Leroy then went into the work force, first for Travenol for a short time as a janitor, then into the grocery business. He became the produce assistant at Dillon’s in Garden City, Kansas, for eleven years. Then he and his family moved to Osawatomie, Kansas to work as the Produce Manager for Willard’s IGA and then Moon’s Hometown Market for 30 years.

In his free time, Leroy enjoyed gardening and working in his yard. He liked woodworking and even owned his own business for a short time. Leroy had a green thumb and arranged flowers beautifully. His favorite holiday was the Fourth of July. Leroy collected eagles and he loved to laugh.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers: Richard Wasinger, Donald Stecklein, Elmer Stecklein and Ronald Stecklein, and sisters: Delores Dreher and Rosie Koerner.

Survivors include children: Scott (Brooke) Stecklein of Olathe, KS, Angela (Nick) Hampson of Osawatomie, KS, Doug (Dawn) Stecklein of Olathe, KS, and Will (Jennifer) Stecklein of Spring Hill, KS, two sisters: Charlene (Dennis) Weigel of Gorham, KS and Theresa Gottschalk of Hays, KS, and sister-in-law Linda Stecklein, eleven grandchildren, and other family and many friends.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 9:00 am on Friday, November 13, 2020 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church with Fr. Nick Parker officiating. Burial with military honors by the Hays VFW Post #9076 Honor Guard will follow in the Kansas Veterans Cemetery in WaKeeney. Visitation will be from 6:00 pm until 8:00 on Thursday and from 8:00 am until 8:45 on Friday, all at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home.
