Eusebia Presbyterian Church Cemetery Blount County, Tennessee

Eusebia Church was chartered in 1786 by the Reverend Archibald Scott. The church is located just over the county line in Blount County, and the site was apparently used as a pioneer cemetery even before the church was established. An excellent history of this cemetery and the community in which it lies is contained in the book “The John Pickens Family”, authored by Nellie Pickens Anderson. Many of the early settlers interred at this site still have descendants bearing their names that live in the area. The cemetery is located in a beautiful valley with a gorgeous view of the Great Smoky Mountains to the south.

Interred at this site are John Pickens, who moved to the area with his wife, Letitia Hannah Pickens, from Washington County, Virginia in 1792. John and Letitia are the fourth great grandparents of Jerry A. Anderson. John was born May 27, 1751 and died May 2, 1835. Letitia was born October 15, 1767 and died August 25, 1851. Both were members of the Eusebia congregation. The site of the original homestead was on Nail’s Creek (approximately two miles north), and at least one of the old homes is still standing there.

Note-I have a picture of myself at about age nine, standing in Eusebia Cemetery next to a tombstone marked “John Boyd-Soldier in the Revolutionary War”. I have no idea who this individual is, but it was obvious that someone in our family did. James Caswell Moore, our earliest known ancestor of the Moore line, was married to a Jane Boyd, so it’s possible that this may have been her father. At this point, I don’t know.

Directions to the Cemetery:

Driving south on Chapman Highway, cross under the John Sevier Highway bridge and continue on for another mile or two. Watch for Valley Grove Baptist Church on your right. After the church, the fifth road on your right will be Burnett’s Station Road. Turn right here, and continue southward. You will now be passing through the old homesteads of our pioneer ancestors. When you reach the intersection with Nail’s Creek Road, the original Pickens home site is off to your left. Continue Southward on Burnett'’ Station until you arrive at Sevierville Road. Eusebia Church will be directly to your left. If you enter the cemetery from Burnett’s Station Road, “Pickens Corner” (the area where the majority of the Pickens graves are located) is immediately on your right. John and Letitia’s graves are easily spotted from the drive
