Geoffrey Le Savage married Lettice de Arden whose family William Shakespeare descended from. Upon his marriage he was given Baginton Castle. Upon his sister's death he received Baddesley Ensor Manor.
His son, Knight William Savage, was one of 22 knights serving John DeCourcy who invaded Ireland in 1176. It was from here the Savage family branched out in Ireland. They built several castles such as:
Ardkeen Castle built in 1196
Portaferry Castle built in 1500.....a small 16th century Tower house built by William Le Savage. It is a square building with a small projecting turret at the south corner. It is three storiss high plus attic. Most of the eastern corner is ruinous.
Kirkistown Castle built in 1622 .....an impressive tower house built in 1622 by Roland Savage. It post-dates the Plantation but is fully in the late medieval tower-house tradition. Parts of the bawn well survive with three-quarter round flanker towers at the angles. The tower was remodelled in gothic style in 1800. The Environment and Heritage Service opened it to the public for the first time in 2001.
