Biography of Levi Murdock

We know very little about the early years, of Levi Murdock. He was born in Bristol, Vermont, 19 May 1790. He may have moved several times, as the next record we have of him is in Warren Co., Indiana. He married Elizabeth Campbell whose home was in Pennsylvania, but most of their children were born in Warren Co., Indiana. When the children were still young, they moved for a few years to Vermillion County, Ill., where they lived for five or six years and then sold our their property and started with the rest of the saints for Zion. They purchased four wagons and eight head of oxen. When they arrived at Nauvoo, his Wife Elizabeth passed away, the(records say at 'St Josephs which must be very near Nauvoo) and the family who were grief stricken, had to bury their mother there and move on.
They had the opportunity while at Nauvoo to visit the Nauvoo Temple,. which made a lasting impression on the members of the family. They then moved on to Winter Quarters, suffering many hardships as did many of the saints at that time. He with his family settled at Wilson Lane, a small settlement near Ogden, where, he purchased a farm and being a very successful farmer, he was able to provide we1l for his family.

He lived a good and useful life and remained faithful to the church, as also did his twelve children , who became faithful workers in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

Levi Murdock passed away on the 18 Sept. 1879 at Wilson Lane, Ogden, Utah. His wife Elizabeth Campbell, who was born in 1800, in Pennsylvania passed away 24 May 1846 at St Josephs, Champaign Co. Illinois.

At the close of a meeting held in Warren County, Ind., August 13th, 1840, Levi Murdock came to me and taking me by the hand asked me if this was Mormon doctrine. I· replied, that it was. He said, I believe every word of it; it 'is the true faith. from this time his house was open for meetings and also for the accommodation of 'Saints. On the 28th of August 1840, I baptized and confirmed him a Latter day. Saint.

Early in the spring' of 1841 Bro. Murdock gathered a small company of Saints and started west with his family. At Nauvoo he stopped for me to go with him, and with his assistance I was enabled to cross the Mississippi river with my family.
