About Lewis Harvey Corbin
By Larry Kelly Nephew 2013:
I remember Lew from my childhood, as he and Joe, his half brother, were close, really close. Especially in the winter on 1953. Our family of five moved in with Lew's family of five in a tiny two bedroom one bath house in Albuquerque, NM. We were jammed in like cord wood. There were folding beds everywhere and hardly room to walk. Then to make matters worse Joe and all three of his kids came down with "Chicken Pox", it damned near killed Joe.
I don't remember what Lew was doing at the time but i do remember him taking a job on the Apache Indian reservation near Ruidoso, NM. They had an older home provided by the government. The reservation is in the mountains with a river running through the center of town. All of Lew's and Joe's children enjoyed a week together and learned many things about the Apache Indian Culture.
Later in the mid 1950's the Corbin's moved back to Albuquerque and I vaguely remember Lew working as a maintenance man at the Parochial School near San Mateo Blvd . In the same era he became interested in Micro-midget Race Cars. These were custom built cars which used chain saw sized motors to power them. I spent several Saturday evenings watching him and my father work on his project. The highlight of this was going to the 66 race track and watching Uncle Lew race against the Unsers (Indy 500 Fame)
Never saw Lew after we moved to El Paso, Tx in 1960 and he died at 54 while I was in the Navy in the 1960's
