Served with credit as a Union soldier during the American Civil War. For many years he lived on a farm in Harrison County, Missouri, came from there to Kingman County, Kansas, where he was a pioneer homesteader, and he died at Wellington, Kansas.
Lewis Nossaman was born the seventh of twelve children of John and Luresa Nossaman. He was raised on farms in Kentucky, Iowa, and Indiana.
When he was 20 he married Elizabeth Eaton, 26 Sep 1846, in Marion County, IN. She died about a year after the wedding (10 Sep 1847). He rebounded quickly, marrying Mary Alice Springer also in Marion County on 13 Jan 1948. His mother died in April of that year, and his father passed in 1849. He relocated shortly thereafter to Harrison, County, Missouri, where he farmed about 2 miles south of Eagleville. On August 29, 1862 at Eagleville, he enlisted in the Union Army, where he was shortly assigned to Company B, 2nd Regiment, Missouri Vol Cavalry--"Merrill's Horse". His unit saw much action, providing escort and screening for the Army in Missouri Arkansas, Tennessee, and Georgia. He rose to the rank of Corporal, then Sergeant before he mustered out in August,1965.
He and Mary had seven boys, six of whom lived to maturity as follows: Alonzo (1850-1916) Warren Pierce "W.P." (1852-1926) Theodore (1856-1861) Oscar (1860-1947) Lewis Douglas "Doug" (1862-1935) Francis Marion "Frank" (1866-1940) David Adrian "Dave" (1870-1954)
In the early 1880's he was separated from Mary, who went to live with her sons in Kansas and Oklahoma. Lewis sold his Missouri farm in 1884, and also moved to Kansas, helping W.P. buy property near Cunningham.
He married again in May, 1886, to Rose Cantwell in Eagleville, MO, (second marriage for her, as well) and purchased land near Wellington, KS, where they lived together until his death in 1907.
