The following is from McClernand Butler Crawford Family Tree Maker:
Lewis was the eldest child and he decided to strike out on his own at about the same time that the family moved to Springfield, Illinois in 1830. It appears that he was intent on marrying the daughter of a neighboring Virginia family that instead, migrated to Springfield, Clark Co., Ohio. On January 12, 1832, he married Catherine Wood in Ohio in a ceremony attended by her father and performed by a Methodist Episcopal preacher, Adam Sellers. Unfortunately, her father's name was never stated and there is no known evidence of her connection with Susan Wood who Lewis was to later marry in Ohio. While living in Ohio, they had a son, John, who was born in 1831. On February 11, 1833, they purchased land from Chambers Dynes and sold it on July 9, 1836, for $1,340, to Francis McKinney.
They moved to Sangamon Co., Illinois for about two years from 1836 to 1838, before moving to Barry County in southwestern Missouri. They possibly lived in Vineyard or Spring River Township, but moved back to Sangamon Co. in the fall of 1844. In 1853, they moved to Mt. Auburn, Christian Co., Illinois. Catherine died there on February 18, 1866, and Lewis returned to Springfield, Ohio, to marry Susan Wood, who is believed to have been Catherine's sister.
In 1870, Lewis was living at 125 Linden Ave., Springfield, Ohio. He was listed as a retired farmer with real estate valued at $3,000. In addition to his second wife, Susanna, also living there were his mother-in-law, Sarah C. Wood, who was 82 years old at the time, and another sister, Sarah A. Wood, and his daughter, Nancy J. "Ricard". On July 24, 1886, he sold the Linden Ave. property for $3,000, and moved in with his daughter, Mary F. Ellis, in Kansas City, Kansas, where he died at the age of 88.
