J. B. Kuykendall killed in auto wreck on hard road, Feb. 3, 1929.
Joseph Benton Kuykendall born Jan. 9, 1842, died Feb. 3, 1929 at age 87. Born in Johnson County, his parents moved to Vienna while very young & remained there until death. He was in college St. Louis, Mo, when Civil War broke out left and enlisted Aug 1861, in Co. D. under John A. Logan Reg. 31st Ill. Vol. Promoted Sergent Major, then 1st Lieut. Com., B 1862 and adjutant of Reg’t. 31st without a wound or day of sickness. While at home on a furlough in 1863 in Aug. was married to Eliza Gorham who died Jan. 18, 1914, which 4 children born Carrie Wolfe Andrews, Joseph B. Jr., Frank S. and Guy S. Kuykendall. In 1916 he was married to Mrs. Minnie Griffin who survives him. He had one step-daughter. On his discharge from the Army in 1864, he entered in mercantile business. But, he soon gave it up taking up the milling business. Which he made good until January 8, 1910, his 68th birthday fire destroyed all and the business was a total loss. Then he went into Drovers State Bank serving as bank president for last few years. He was a member of M. E. Church in Vienna quite awhile. Also, member of Mason Lodge No. 150, Royal Arch Chapter and the G. A. R. Post in Vienna and only 2 members was present at funeral, Jas. S. Hester and Amos Carter. Funeral conducted by pastor of M. E. Church, Rev. J. M. Clayton and laid to rest in Vienna Fraternal Cemetery to await the resurrection.”
Joseph Kuykendall served in the 31st Illinois Infantry Regiment.
