About Lieut Lewis Sieley Dilley
Born in Howland Township, Trumbull County Ohio, he appeared in the 1850 U.S. Census in Ashtabula, Ohio as a 17-year old printer, possibly an apprentice, living in the household of James Burton and his wife. Lewis enlisted for Civil War army service, August 22, 1862, 103rd Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry at Cleveland, Ohio. Occupation : Printer. Mustered into Company E, he appears as 1st Sergeant, before promotion to 2nd Lieutenant, February 9, 1863, and then to 1st Lieutenant, March 21, 1864. With his promotion to Captain, May 18, 1865, he was transferred to Company G. He was apparently discharged at the end of the war.
There are two Ohio Graves Registration Cards for him. The first shows him buried in Howland Twp. Cemetery in a plot with his parents and brother. The second shows him buried in West Lawn Cemetery in Canton. His name is on Panel # in the Cuyahoga County Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument, Public Square., Cleveland, OH. A Minor pension application was filed by a Lewis A. Dilley and a William D. Medill, April 2, 1903, in California but never issued.
His marriage information remains confused and further research is pending.
