Biography

On 10 February 1691, Mary (Stocker) Chadwick married Benjamin Harnden in Reading, Middlesex County, (then) Massachusetts Bay Colony. The marriage was recorded as, "Harnden, Benjamin and Mary ____, Feb. 10, 1690-1."[1] The proof of the marriage is in the documentation of Samuel Chadwick's inventory & administration of his estate:

On 5 March 1690 "An Invintary of the estat of Samwell Chadwick of Reden desesed 26 febrewary 1690" was made. It contained a dwelling house and land, a pair of oxen and other livestock, normal household goods, firearms & books, totaling £66.02.00. Debts totalled £10.14.00, owed to Daniel Smith of Charlestown gunsmith, Joseph Richardson Sr., and several others.[2]

On 07 April 1691, "... my former husband Samll. Chadwick ... deceased without a will and left me two small children to bring up, and only this small estate to pay the abovesaid debts & to maintaine my selfe & children ... I pray that your honor. would please to grant administration to my husband that I now have, and so setle the above estate as the law may be sattesfyed & no wrong to partyes concerned ... Mary Harndine... " "Administration was granted to Benjamin Harnden & his wife Mary Harnden on the estate of Samll Chadwick"[3]

With her second husband, Benjamin Harnden, Mary (Stocker) (Chadwick) Harnden had[4]:

Elizabeth, b. 1692 Hannah, b. 1694 Benjamin, b. 1697 Richard, b. 1699 (twin) Samawell, b. 1699 (twin) Benjamin probably married a second time to Elizabeth Holt of Andover, although no death record is found for wife Mary after the birth of her twins in 1699. In Andover, Essex County, Province of Mass. Bay, the following marriage record is found: "Harndon, Benjamine, and Elizabeth Holt, June 14, 1711."[5] And a death record in Wilmington, Middlesex County: "Harnden, Elizabeth, wife of Benjamin Dec. 31, 1734."[6]

On 22 May 1740, Benjamin Harnden of Wilmington made his will. He made bequests to son Benjamin, a pair of oxen valued at £20 or £20 in money; to daughter Elizabeth P[r]eston a good cow; to daughter Hannah Wright a good cow, the oxen and the cow, I lent to my son Samuell, they are to come out of his estate; to daughters Preston & Wright household goods to be divided between them. Signed with his mark; witnesses Thomas Peirce, Timothy Heaveny?, Mehetablel Johnson[7]
