Birth

If Lieut. Daniel Pond was born about 1627 it had to have occurred in England, likely in Edwardstone or Groton, Suffolk whence came his forebears. Some sources say he was born in Dedham, Massachusetts [1], but Dedham did not exist until 1635 and John Pond, and his brother, not named in any contemporary source, who may have been Robert, first arrived in Massachusetts Bay in 1630. If instead he was born in 1630 or later, that might have happened in Boston, Charlestown, Watertown, Salem, or another of the towns settled immediately upon the arrival of the Winthrop Fleet, but no record of that has yet been found.

Daniel was, most sources argue, the son of Robert Pond and Mary Ball. In marriage records for his parents her maiden name is not listed. Only that they married about 1631 in Massachusetts. [2] [3]Robert Pond was the son of William Pond and Judith Gordon born on 10 Sept 1600 in England. [4]

That Daniel was son of Robert is discussed in Sharon Lynn Ideman, "The Pond Family" which relies heavily on Robert Croll Stevens, "The Genealogy of Robert Pond," in Ancestry of the Children of Robert Croll Stevens and Jane
Eleanor Stevens, Vol. IV, Pittsford, NY, 1990, pp. 208.1-208.8.

After his father Robert Pond died, Mary (Ball) Pond married 2nd to Edward Shepard. Daniel Pond would later marry Edward Shepard's daughter and who was also his step-sister Abigail Shepard. [5]

"Daniel Pond settled in Dedham as early as 1652, where he died Feb. 4, 1698." [6]

Whenever and wherever he was born, Daniel was in Dedham, Massachusetts Bay Colony and an adult in 1652, when he bought property and got married there.

Daniel Pond married first Abigail Shepard in 30 March 1652 in Dedham, Massachusetts [7]. She died on 4 May 1662 in Dedham, Massachusetts. [8] West puts her death earlier on 5 July 1661 and her birth in 1631 in Cambridge, Mass. [9] Abigail was the daughter of his step-father Edward Shepard.
