Edward & Grace (Bett) Morris's son Ebenezer was born 14 April 1664 in Roxbury, Suffolk, Massachusetts [1] and baptized 17 Apr 1664 at Roxbury, Mass[2]. He married Sarah Davis 1 Sep 1692 at Woodstock, Conn. [2] Ebenzer died Feb 26 1718 in Woodstock, Windham, CT and buried in Woodstock Hill Cemetery, Woodstock, Windham, CT [2]
One of the thirteen "goers" who first went from Roxbury "to spy out" Woodstock and take possession. On the day Ebenezer died he was 53 years old, and Ætatis suæ (i.e., Æ, "Aged," in the XX year of his Age) 54.
He was one of the thirteen pioneers "goers" who left Roxbury in the spring of 1686 "to spy out" for the settlement of Woodstock. In the division of land he drew lot No. 7, on the west side of "Plaine Hill," and lot No. 4 in the meadow land. He was associated with his brother Edward, as selectman, for nine years, viz.: 1703, 1705, 1706, 1707, 1709, 1712, 1713, 1715, and 1716. During some of these years he was also assessor. He's was also admitted to the church in May, 1693. He left an estate of £605 16s. 5d., as appears by the Probate records of Suffolk County.
Ebenezer Morris, Benjamin Sabin and Jonathan Smithers settled at the same site to establish New Roxbury, the first European settlement in Windham County. In 1690, Judge Samuel Sewall gave the Town its name after Woodstock in Oxfordshire, England “because of its nearness to Oxford, for the sake of Queen Elizabeth.” Woodstock seceded from the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1749 to become part of the Connecticut Colony. Captain, later General, Samuel McClellan and 184 men went forth to fight in the Revolutionary War. General McClellan’s house still stands on the corner of Route 169 and Stone Bridge Road.
Peter Aspinwall in 1686 was among the “Thirteen Goers” ttps://www.geni.com/people/Peter-Aspinwall/6000000001212798488 as wasThomas Bacon II Thomas Bacon, II, Henry Bowen, Matthew Davis, John Frizzel, Nathaniel Gary, John Gore, Benjamin Griggs, George Griggs, John Marcy,
John Eliot, Pastor of the First Church in Roxbury, Massachusetts Bay Colony, and Major Daniel Gookin came to Woodstock in 1674 and preached to the Wabaquasset Indians from Eliot Rock. The Wabaquasset were a band of Native Americans who formerly lived west of the Quinebaug River, in what is now Windham County, Connecticut.
