John Savage was born June 11, 1739, in Boston a son of Thomas Savage and his first wife, Deborah (Briggs) Savage. John was an early merchant of Boston, in business at No. 13 Long Wharf. An advertisement that ran in the Boston Gazette, in 1761 and 1763 gave a list of the commodities that he sold, including West India and New England rum, sugar, rice, coffee, pepper, ginger, chocolate, raisins, long and short pipes, window glass and wine glasses. John was later in partnership with his brother, Habijah, until the time of the American Revolutionary War. [1]

John was a Second Lieutenant in the 10th Massachusetts Regiment during the War and is honored by the Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution for his military service. [2] John married Mary Greenough, daughter of Thomas Greenough and Martha (Clark) Greenough. John and Mary were the parents of twelve children. Application for membership in the Society of the DAR has been made by the descendants of his son, Alexander, who married Priscilla Thomas. [3]
