Biography

Lieutenant John Shaw was born September 16, 1727, and christened at Eastham, Barnstable, Massachusetts, the son of George Shaw and Mercy (Rich) Shaw. [1] John served as an officer during the American Revolutionary War, under the command of Colonel Walker. A bronze plaque marks his grave in Union Cemetery, in Carver, Massachusetts. It was placed by the Lt John Shaw Society to mark his burial. [2] Applications for membership in the society of Daughters of the American Revolution have been made by his descendants through John Shaw, his son by Elizabeth Lucas, who married Abigail Perkins.

On January 31, 1749/50 in lands of Plympton (that became Carver 9th June 1790) Plymouth County, Massachusetts, John married Elizabeth Lucas, born February 17, 1734/35, in Plympton (now Carver), daughter of Lieutenant Samuel Lucas and Abigail (Shaw) Lucas.

Researcher's Notes

The recording of dates of birth with double dates, such as 1726/1727, is due to the changes from the Old Style Calendar. Before 1752 the year began on Lady Day, March 25th,. Dates between January 1st and March 24th were at the end of the year. Old Style (O.S.) and New Style (N.S.) are used to indicate whether the year has been adjusted. Often both dates are used.

There is some confusion regarding John's birthplace. Rootsweb gives his place of birth as Middleborough, with christening in Eastham [3] DAR records indicate that he was born and died in Carver, Plymouth county, MA. This is because Carver was actually part of Plympton at the time of John's birth. His Find A Grave memorial has him born in Middleborough, however they give his birth parents as John Shaw (1699-1780) and Abigail (Perry) Shaw, although there is an annotation on the memorial page that he is the son of George Shaw and Mercy Rich, the linkage to the parents memorials has not been corrected.
