Biography

Samuel Brown was born November 7, 1790, the son of Samuel Brown and Martha Harding of Eastham, Massachusetts.[1] [2]

His father died when he was an infant. An inventory of the estate of his father, "Samuel Browne of Eastham who Deceased on the third of December 1691", intestate, was taken on 09 April 1692. "Martha Browne vid Relict of ye above sd Samuel Browne" made oath to the inventory on 20 April 1692. Martha to have 1/3 of the estate for her life, and £20 additional towards bringing up the children. The rest of the estate to be divided amongst the children, with a double portion to the son. John Collens of Eastham appointed guardian to Samuel and Bethiah Brown 19 April 1697.[3][4]

04 January 1709/10, at the request of Samuel Brown a minor son of Samuel Brown late of Eastham deceased, Joshua Harding of Eastham the uncle of said minor is appointed guardian to Samuel Brown, Harding haven given bonds.[5]

His intention of marriage and the marriage itself are recorded in Eastham and Sandwich records:

Intentions:
"october ye 23d: 1717: Samuel Brown Junr gave account of his intent to contract marriage with Lidya Fish of Sandwich in order to have it published" [6] [7]

Marriage:
"The marriage between Samuel Brown of Eastham and Lydia Fish of Sandwich was Solemnized before William Bassett Just of Peace att Sandwich the eleventh day of February Anno Domini 1717"[8] [9]

Samuel died in Eastham on 03 May 1739, in his 48th year, and was buried in the cemetery there where his gravestone still stands.[10]

The children of Samuel and Lydia (Fish) Brown, born Eastham, included:[11] [9]

Martha, born July 8, 1720[11]
Samuel, born July 18, 1722[11]
Elizabeth, born April 1, 1724[11]
Lydia, born April 1726[11]
Bethia, born May 1728[11]
Jemima, born March 1732[11]
Mary, born March 1734[11]
Disputed Parents

Andrew Langlois, "Descendants of John Young of Plymouth and Eastham" in The Mayflower Descendant Vol. 54:101, says Samuel was the spouse of Ruth Young (1688-1768), daughter of John & Ruth (Cole) Young, and had born at Eastham:

Abigail 1709
Samuel 1711
Samuel 1714
Mehitable 1714
Ruth 1716
However, that was a different Samuel Brown, son of George Brown and Mehitable Knowles.

Disputed Descendants

The Mary Brown who married William Witherell died in 1774 aged 46 years, per her grave; this gives an estimated birth date of 1728, not 1734. That Mary Brown was most likely the daughter of Samuel and Ruth Brown; she was named as an unmarried daughter in his 1748 will, and is recorded as having married William Witherell in 1752.
