About Lillian Agnes Alexie (Cox)

His father, Sherman Joseph Alexie, was a member of the Coeur d'Alene tribe, and his mother, Lillian Agnes Cox, was of Colville, Choctaw, Spokane and European American ancestry. One of his paternal great-grandfathers was of Russian descent. ... His father was an alcoholic who often left the house for days at a time. To support her six children, Alexie's mother Lillian sewed quilts and worked as a clerk at the Wellpinit Trading Post.

Lillian is survived by her five children Arnold Alexie, Sherman Alexie, Jr, Kim Alexie, Arlene Alexie, and James Alexie, along with her grandchildren Brea Franco, Stevie Alexie, Joseph Tomhave-Alexie, and David Tomhave-Alexie, and her great-grandchild Elena Franco, and her siblings, Inez Hubert, Viola Frizelle, and Chucky Cox, and by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Lillian was a proud member of the Spokane Tribe of Indians and was a social worker for the tribe for decades. She loved quilting, watching basketball games, and traveling the powwow circuit. She was powerful, beautiful, hilarious, and intelligent.

Lillian was preceded in death by her parents Etta and James Cox, by her siblings Arnold Cox, Leonard Cox, and Virginia Bradshaw, and by her daughter Mary McCoy.

She will be laid to rest alongside her late husband, Sherman Alexie, Sr., at Sacred Heart Cemetary in Wellpinit, WA on July 7, 2015.
