About Lillias Avery
THE GROTON AVERY CLAN, Vol. II, by Elroy McKendree Avery and Catherine Hitchcock (Tilden) Avery, Cleveland, 1912. p. 1336
Born Lillias Pomeroy in the autumn of 1860, Mrs. Avery, age 72, was the widow of Charles I. Avery, who had predeceased her 6 years earlier. She joined her husband in Fort Hill Cemetery on May 31, 1933. The couple's daughter, Janet Pomeroy Avery, married John Foster Dulles, who later became U.S. Secretary of State during the Eisenhower Administration. Thus they were also the maternal grandparents of the distinguished Roman Catholic theologian Avery, Cardinal Dulles, S.J.
