2nd Lieutenant West Yorkshire Regiment (Prince of Wales's Own)
Russell Lionel Phillips died December 20th 1901 of wounds received in action the previous day at Holland. He was the son of Sir W. R.Russell of Flaxmere, Hastings. He was nominated by the Governor of New Zealand for a commission in the Regular Army and was gazetted to his regiment in January 1901,his commission bearing date July 18th 1900. The day he received his mortal wound, the British were suddenly attacked by several hundred Boers who were mistaken for friends, as they were dressed in khaki. 2nd Lieutenant Russell fell while leading his men against largely superior numbers.
