About Lodwick Alford

Biography

http://www.alfordassociation.org/GENEALOGY/joh645va3.pdf

This Lodwick is one of the most controversial ancestors we Alfords have. Look for frequent updates on this one as we can get them coordinated.

Lodwick Alford b. about 1710, New Kent Co., VA, m. (1) Elizabeth _____ , b. Apr 29 1717, New Kent Co., VA, d. May 29 1735, New Kent Co., VA, m. (2) Susanna _____ b. Sep 25 1718, m. (3) Unknown . Lodwick died 1800, Franklin Co.,

His birth date is estimated. His presence is proved by several entries in the St. Peter's Parish Register, New Kent County, VA. His birth in VA is assumed. There has long been a family tradition- reinforced by some DAR records- that Lodwick married a Rebecca Ferrell. Nothing has been found to support this idea. A North Carolina court record lists his wife as Sarah and some believe he married, Sarah the widow of his brother Goodrich. It appears that the daughters of Goodrich were mentioned in Lodwick's will.

There is nothing to indicate the mother of any of the children other than William, Elizabeth and Jacob whose births are recorded in St. Peter's Parish, New Kent County, VA. There is a will and court records to support the death of a Lodwick in Franklin County at about this time. A copy of the will is available on the website. There has long been a family tradition, reinforcedby some records of the Daughters of the American Revolution, that LodwickAlford married a Rebecca Ferrell. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Lodwick Alford: Born New Kent County, Virginia, about 1708ÙX10 (some records indicate 1715); son of James; married (First)Elizabeth; had one son, William, born July 31, 1734. This Williammigrated with his father to North Carolina and settled in Wayne County.Elizabeth, Lodowick's (first) wife, died May 29, 1735 in New Kent County,Virginia. Shortly thereafter Lodowick married his (second) wife, Susana. They had a daughter, ElizabethÙvborn in New Kent County, December 22, 1736(Nothing further learned of this daughter), and a son, Jacob, born in NewKent County, December 12, 1738. Jacob also migrated, with his fatherLodowick, to North Carolina and settled in Robeson County where he diedin or about 1794. He had several children and there are authenticatedrecords of this Jacob and his family descendants dating back to a LandGrant made to him on April 4, 1764. He, according to records, was asoldier in the American Revolution. Lodowick received a Land Grant inEdgecomb County, North Carolina, October 30, 1753. He was in CaptainSimms Company, Granville County Militia in 1554 [sic%C3%99vshould be 1774]; hewas a member of the North Carolina General Assembly; and he was a man ofprominence in the Colonial Affairs of the State. He and Susana had anumber of other children including James, born about 1740. A CaptainJames Alford died in Hancock County, Georgia on November 6, 1812, age72Ùvperhaps this son. He is also reported to have had a son, Lodowick,Jr.; altogether he is reported to have had twenty-one children. His(second) wife Susana, apparently died about 1760, and he married his(third) wife Rebecca Ferrell. Actually there are records of severalLodowick Alfords about this time and there is ample opportunity forconfusing their identity. For instance one record has it that thisLodowick was instrumental in granting reimbursement to his sonJamesÙvwhile in the General AssemblyÙvfor the loss of currency, burnedduring the destruction of the son's home by fire, and that he wasinstrumental in securing the exemption of the son "James" from theMilitia. Actually, records are very vague as to the military service ofthis James Alford during the Revolution, although he is reported to havereceived a Land Grant in Georgia for military service. There is a recordof a Lodowick Alford in Wake County, North Carolina, but his birth anddeath is not consistent with the New Kent County Lodowick, who seems tohave died in Georgia in 1789. The many Alfords of the same or near thesame name living in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama andother Southern States during the Eighteenth and Nineteenth Centuries andwhose genealogies are traced in a number of well known books make itsuperfluous for any one to attempt further research. This, I think, isparticularly true of Lodowick of New Kent County. One record claims thisLodowick died in Franklin County, 1794. As indicated, records ofLodowick's brothers, James and Warren, are obscure. Goodrich Alford: bornNew Kent County, Virginia about 1712 son of James and brother ofLodowick, James, Warren and Julius married Sarah. He and his wife hadthree children, SarahÙvborn 1733, LucyÙvborn 1737, and SusanaÙvborn 1739.Goodrich migrated with his brothers to North Carolina and died inEdgecomb County in 1753. His brother Lodowick administered his will onNovember 20, 1753. It is not known whether Goodrich had any male heirs.
