About Loffie van der Gryp

Loffie van der Gryp (1960 -2008)

Brief overview:

Loffie (48), son of well-known dairy farmer Piet, and his family were attacked by a gang of 12 perpetrators on 28th October 2008, at their Sterkfontein dairy farm. Loffie was the Manager of the large commercial dairy business. Mr van der Gryp had a routine of walking the 150m from the main homestead of the family to the dairy to double-check all the refrigerators before going to bed, said his sister in law Salomé Henning (35), and probably was attacked during this brief walk just outside the dairy company's offices. He was tied up and beaten over the head with firearms and rocks by the gang members who forced him to give them access to the safe.

Their tenant Pastor Boer Booysen (65), who lives in one of in the three homesteads on the property arrived at 22:30 after a meeting, and suspected that something was amiss when he saw a light burning in the dairy office. He took his gun and a flashlight and walked over with his son Jaco. They went to the house but nobody replied, then at the office he saw a hand appear from the door opening with a gun, and shots were fired at him. The pastor returned fire and during this firefight, and was injured in the leg. Mr Loffie van der Gryp was, it is now believed, bashed over the head with a very heavy rock and then shot in the chest and head. He must have died immediately. About 21 bullets were lodged in the walls and windows of the dairy and office. Roelof was the first to come across his father's body 'which was still warm'. The family also found their dog beaten to death.
