Wikitree: Lois (Pond) Lee (1690)

  • Lois Pond was one of four surviving daughters named in the 1718 Will of Samuel Pond (1648-aft.1718).[1] She is reported to have been baptized in Branford in 1690.[2] It is perhaps on this basis that Donald Lines Jacobus assigned her a year of birth of 1690.[3] The search continues for a primary source which documented this baptism.
  • Marriages and Children of Joseph Lee
    • Jacobus, in his widely respected Families of Ancient New Haven, concluded that Joseph Lee of Guilford married Lois Pond.[4] This conclusion is substantiated by an agreement of 18 April 1718 which was signed by the surviving “Legatees of the Estate of Lieutenant Samuel Pond of East Guilford Late Deceased” -- including "Joseph Lees" and "Lois Lees".[5] Hence, the marriage must have taken place before this date. The marriage is also documented by a 1721 record from a probate court of Fairfield County which documented that that Thankful Pond and Naomi Pond, nieces of Lois (i.e. daughter's of Lois's deceased brother Nathaniel Pond (1676-1716) of Stamford) chose "their uncle Mr. Joseph Lee of Gilford" as guardian.[6]
    • What appears to be a rare error in the account of Jacobus is the statement that Joseph Lee married Lois Pond on 24 June 1730.[7] This is the date documented in Guilford records on which Joseph Lee married his 2nd wife, "Rebecca Lewis of Haddam".[8]
    • The 1753 Will of Joseph Lee[9], in addition to naming his wife Rebecca also named a surviving son and three surviving daughters:
      • Joseph Jr, m. Mary Bayley in Guilford on 23 Mar. 1736[10]
      • Myriam, m. Mark Hodgkins in Guilford on 8 Jan. 1751[11]
      • "Elizabeth Spencer", m. Nathaniel Spencer 27 Mar. 1744 in Haddam[12]
      • Lucy, m. John Norton Jr in Guilford on 27 Dec. 1758.[13]
    • If the Joseph Lee Jr. who married Mary Bayley in Guilford in 1736 was the surviving son of the man who first married Lois Pond, this would suggest that Joseph Lee Jr. (abt.1710-) had been born to Lois. With the exception of Elizabeth, the years of birth or years of marriage of the other children suggest that they could have been born to Rebecca. The search continues for records with which to estimate the year of birth of "Elizabeth Spencer".
  • Death of Lois
    • The search continues for primary sources with which to document the death of Lois. While there is a FindAGrave web memorial for her[14] it does not appear to be based upon any primary source. She presumably died for 24 June 1730 when Joseph Lees married second to Rebecca Lewis.[15]
  • Research Issue
    • Jacobus appears to have misattributed to Lois Pond the date (24 June 1730) on which Joseph Lee married Rebecca Lewis. Another apparent error appeared in Jacobus' The Four Spencer Brothers which stated that Nathaniel Spencer married " Elizabeth Lee, daughter of Joseph and Lois (Plumb) Lee". — Were these apparent errors addressed in any of Jacobus' "Additions and Corrections"?

His second marriage has usually been assigned erroneously as a first marriage of his son, Nathaniel, Jr." Note the reference to "Lois (Plumb) Lee". Is this another error, akin to the statement in Families of Ancient New Haven that Joseph Lee and Lois Pond married on 24 June 1730 ?

Find a Grave®: Lois Pond Lee

  • "Lois' exact death date is not known. It has been speculated that it was sometime in the late 1730s.
  • "Lois Pond and Joseph Lee were married June 24, 1730, East Guilford (now Madison), CT. They had six known children: Joseph II, Elizabeth, Miriam, Josiah, Lucy, and Phineas.
  • "According to Connecticut Town Birth Records (Barbour) Joseph married Rebecca Lewis of Haddam on June 24, 1730 in Guilford. This would suggest that Lois Pond and Joseph Lee would have been married about 1711 and that she died before 1730. Contributor: Marshall Anderson (47662157)"
