LOIS DELPHINE ZUMWALT was born February 19, 1917 in Forest Grove, Oregon, the daughter of the late William Bramwell Taylor and Mabel Lucille (Staley) Taylor. She was raised and received her education in the Forest Grove community, having been a graduate of the Forest Grove High School Class of 1934. Upon her high school graduation she attended Pacific University and later Oregon State College (known today as Oregon State University) in Corvallis, Oregon, having received a B.S. Degree in Education in 1938. Lois taught school in the communities of Roseburg and Corvallis. She was united in marriage to Donal Harold Zumwalt on August 3, 1940 in the Glide Memorial Methodist Church in San Francisco, California. Following their marriage they resided in Hanford, California, until 1942 when they returned to the Forest Grove community, where she has resided since. Lois was preceded in death by her husband, Donal, on October 20, 1993. She taught Business Education in the Hillsboro school district for12 years and was a substitute teacher for many years until she retired. She was a P.T.A. Lois had served on the Board of the Older Girls Conference (Interdenominational and Interracial Organization); the Board of the American Heritage Association; was an active member of the Forest Grove United Methodist Church since age 8; and was a member and volunteer with Valley Arts in Forest Grove, for several years. She was a member of P.E.O. and Delta Kappa Gamma, an education honorary, and a charter member of Pacific Progress Club. Among her special interests she enjoyed knitting, crafts, handwork, traveling and camping in their RV. Lois also had a special love for gardening and caring for her yard. Lois was also preceded in death by her parents, by her brother, Brooks Taylor; her sister, Corrine Kelsey and her grand-daughter, Kelsi Rae Force. Survivors include her three daughters and sons-in-law, Kareen L Burnard, of Beaverton, Oregon; Donalyn R. and Donald DeClerck, of Hillsboro, Oregon; and Barbara C. and Robert Force, of Gales Creek, Oregon. Also surviving are her four grandchildren and their spouses, Jeffrey R. and Miwako Burnard, of Oita, Japan; Stacey J. and Eric Clendenin, of Sherwood, Oregon; Ryan T. DeClerck and his fiancee', Ally Stone, of Sherwood, Oregon; and Amanda B. Force, of Erie, Pennsylvania; her five great-grandchildren, Kyli Burnard, Kenndan Burnard, Kaelin Clendenin, Dawson Clendenin and Nixon Clendenin; and three nieces and two nephews. The family suggests that remembrances may be contributions to the American Cancer Society, 0330 SW Curry Street, Portland, Oregon, 97201, the Forest Grove United Methodist Church, 1726 Cedar Street, Forest Grove, Oregon 97116, or to one's charity of choice, in her memory.
