About Lord John Johnstone of that Ilk
John Johnstone, the eldest son of Adam, was progenitor of the Annandale branch.
John was present at the battle of Arkinholm, 1 May 1455. He took part against the Douglases, and in the royal expedition against their castle of Threave in Galloway.
He was engaged as a commander of Scottish Royalist forces in the Battle of Lochmaben, 22 July 1484. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Lochmaben_Fair
Adam's son supported King James II of Scotland in putting down the Clan Douglas. They won their lands of Buittle and Sannoch near Threave Castle as a reward.
John's offspring would become the main chief Johnstone family.
