Jim Weber notes: "--son John Carlyle named heir to estates in Galloway Administration of Estate 10 Nov 1463 Kinmont, Middlebie, Luce, Kinhill, Locherwood 5

"1413--First mention of Sir William is as a hostage for payment of the ransom of the Countess of Douglas.

"1431--"he's one of the Scots who escorted the 11 year old Margaret daughter of James I of Scotland to her marriage to the 13 year old Louis the Dauphin of France (who became Louis XI much later, long after she had died neglected & childless).

"1443--named as a benefactor of Dumfries, insc[r]ibed on a new church bell he'd paid for.

"In every odd-numbered year between 1449 and 1459 he's named as one of the guarantors of the truce with the English."

It appears that the Carlyle's obtained the Castle and lands of Torthorwald from the Kirkpatricks when William married Elizabeth Kirkpatrick about 1418.

He gave a bell to the town of Dumfries, bearing the inscription in old Latin, "Guillielmus de Carleil, Dom de Torthorwald, me sicut fecit fieri, in hororem, Sancti Michaelis. Ann. Dom, MCCCCXLIII. (From William and Mary Quarterly.

He was invested as a Knight on 29 January 1487/88. He succeeded to the title of 2nd Lord Carlyle of Torthorwald circa 1501. On 12 January 1500 he had a charter of the Barony of Carlyle. On 11 May 1503 he had seizin of certain of his grandfather's lands.
